    ChineseDemocracyGNR:
What do you mean by discontinued?
The WN-2S+ didn't hit the street yet.

I heard the talk about buffers on board. I'm not shure if it's the case. Maybe it's like with the AMD MPX dual-chipset For Athlon where you can use unbuffered in max two slots or buffered in them all.

    Thursday at midnight?
    Thursday afternoon?

    Inquiring minds want to know...

Crucial offers overnight shipping for $11.50, not bad.

#12: Yes, I think they ship almost all order from Jersey for the east coast.
  • static117 - Monday, April 18, 2005 - link

#12 actually I get it out of Jersey, i use the tracking number to follow it, it ships from jersey.
    Thanks though

#10, the reason you get the Newegg items in a day is because they ship out of La Puente, where Newegg is HQ'd.

I think he wanted to get the memory as soon as possible. Newegg will obviously have what he is looking for in stock, but I think he can't wait that long. Regardless, it looks like he has found a solution.

    Hey Anand-

I usually get my stuff from newegg.com. I know they ship it from jersey, and they usually get it to me here in Cali a day early or so. I dont know what they have in stock, but you might want to check them out.

Okay, Anand, I found you some registered memory in your area by using pricewatch.com.

    http://www.hardcorecooling.us/index.asp?PageAction...

The company is called Hard Core Cooling.com and they are located at

    http://www.hardcorecooling.us/
    110 Mountain Rd., 2nd Floor
    Suffield, CT 06078
    860-668-1239

The link I provided should go directly to a page with a matched pair of registered DIMMs. I hope that helps.
  • dubb - Saturday, April 16, 2005 - link

That's a start, but still not that useful, the benchmarks need to be more specific, and include more apps.
  • AtaStrumf - Saturday, April 16, 2005 - link

dubb, strangely you should mention that. Go here:

    http://216.92.52.205/index.html

I think it's just what you need, and AT would be wise to offer something similar. Much better than endless pages of charts.
  • Captante - Saturday, April 16, 2005 - link

Hi again... Strangly, Comp-USA had a couple matched pairs of registered 512mb PC3200 DIMM's in stock 3 or 4 weeks ago *(Centon-branded I think)... I will be in the store later today (Saturday now) & will take a look around, but I think they are gone, so don't get too worked up ... cross your fingers though & if I find one of them left I'll stash it in "Business-sales" for you, labeled "AT", so as not to blow your cover, & post tonight to let you know its waiting.

    Uhh...NO.

the win-2s+ was a special case. something about having the buffer on the board itself or some other workaround. Opterons will continue to need registered ram for the forseeable future.

Fairly obviously a hint at a dual core opteron piece, can I request including all manner of duals in the comparison? I think the most confusion will arise for budget - mid range workstation buyers... dual core pentium vs dual single core xeons or opterons vs dual dual cores. Throw in trying to figure it out for your specific needs/apps (and specific functions of said apps) and considering price/performance could get very tricky.

actually, now that I think about it, for such a review to be truly useful, it would be so long and data-drowned no one would want to bother with it. Maybe we need an approach that begins with the software, not the hardware, since people buy workstations based around a particular pipeline. It'd be a great tool if users could select from a list of apps and narrow it down themselves...i.e...Pick 3dsmax, then chose the renderer, and see benchmarks on that particular combo.
  • ChineseDemocracyGNR - Saturday, April 16, 2005 - link

I thought the new revision Opterons also worked with non-registered memory, at least on some motherboards.

That is the case with the (discontinued) ABIT WN-2S+ at least.
  • icarus4586 - Saturday, April 16, 2005 - link

Hrm, maybe a dual-core Opteron review in the works?

    Hopefully.
  • Creathir - Saturday, April 16, 2005 - link

    Microcenter MIGHT have that...
They are located on Long Island though... so not sure if you want to drive that far.
